That's why a GI carbine is so utterly reliable like an AK. M1 Carbines as designed require a VERY high level of manufacturing precision and top notch materials. They were sporting rifles that looked like an M1 Carbine, but were a LONG way away from being a GI carbine. Cast aluminum trigger housing, stamped slide with two recoil spring, and a receiver that would no longer accept many GI parts. Later ones used a brazed on gas port on the barrels. They used a cast commercial receiver with nearly all GI parts. Like Snake said, very early Universals werent bad. Sounds like the OP has one of the earlier, more desirable types. When you can't fix it anymore, it's a wall ornament. The older guns are okay, but I wouldn't give you more than $100 for a 'Type 2,' as they are notorious for breaking parts, particularly that stamped op-rod, and replacement parts are scarce. These can be instantly recognized by the stamped op-rods ('slides') with bolt lug cutout. Later, they did a gun that was basically an M1 lookalike that would accept few USGI parts. The older type was built on cast receivers with many (all?) USGI parts, like the Nat Ord/Fed Ord guns. If I understand the Universal situation, there are two distinct types of these. Universal gained a bad.Īnd it is supposed to have only one recoil spring.

This resulted in the ability of the rifle to fire out of battery. Changes included a slide lock lever by the rear sight, the trigger housing was made of aluminum, and several safety features were deleted to reduce costs. The third generation included cost saving designs that started the company's reputation for poor quality. (Started between SN 176xxx and 187xxx, went until end of production) The transition in production between second generation and third generation is somewhere between 176xxx and 187xxx. The front sight was held on with a setscrew, rather than pinned as the USGI is. These could still accept the USGI trigger housing, and some had the M2 style metal upper handguard. These had a leaf style flip rear sight, round bolt, magazine catch marked M, and new trigger housing. This model eliminated the bolt locking mechanism all together.

The second generation is where Universal got creative, started redesigning things, added the second recoil spring, and started to machine their own parts. (Started between SN 93xxx - 104xxx, ended between SN 176xxx and 187xxx) The transition in production between first generation and second generation is somewhere between 93xxx and 104xxx. One example in the sub-5xxx SN range had an IBM barrel with flaming bomb emblem. The first generation Universal M1 Carbine mainly used USGI parts, including a USGI bolt locking mechanism. (Started with SN 0, ended between 93xxx - 104xxx):
